IN DEFENSE OF MISS VAN DER WOODSEN
Okay, just because I saw a post relating to this idea and I COULD NOT CONTAIN ALL MY FEELS. I didn’t want to respond directly to anyone because that always feels awkward and I am a coward, but let’s just say someone is rooting for Derena to reunite in season 6. I do not begrudge anyone this hope or judge anyone for liking this couple. That’s all well and good. Now, my main issue is that Dan needs to prove to Serena that he does and can love her the way she deserves. It would take the better part of ten episodes for me to believe he could ever treat her properly, or that she could ever trust his feelings again.
So, of course, I’m a little shocked to discover that it’s still possible to fault Serena in the DS equation. What has Serena done to him, I ask you? Legitimately, what did she do wrong to hurt him? Even when they weren’t dating, she treated him with respect and looked to him as a friend. When they decided not to be together in season 4, it wasn’t because she hadn’t chosenhim – it was because they didn’t feel ready to try again. The worst thing she did was date Ben soon after that while he was living in the same loft as Dan. But did Dan ever express to her that this hurt him or that he loved her and wanted to be with her instead of seeing her with Ben? No, because he was busy falling for her best friend, wasn’t he?
So that’s my first problem, I guess. If we’re going to blame Serena for being flaky, then she’s guilty of no greater sin than Dan, who pursued a relationship with her married best friend despite having been explicitly informed that Serena was still in love with him – not to mention seeing Serena’s crestfallen face multiple times during that span. And of course, he wrote a book where he made her into a dumb slut and proceeded to tell her that the depiction of her in the novel basically coincided with his real opinion of her, thereby discrediting their 4+ years of history. So, please, anyone: enlighten me as to what exactly Serena needs to make up to Dan? She shouldn’t have recorded them having the sex, I will give DHumps that. I’m sure he’s torn up inside about that.
Sidenote: if we’re going to say that Serena has killed her friendship with Blair by sleeping with the boyfriend Blair was about to dump because she loved Chuck anyway, can we just make a point to mention that Blair dated a guy she knew Serena was in love with despite the fact that she was in love with Chuck and not him, as well as the fact that she was married at the time? Just because she was trying to run away from her feelings for Chuck and God forbid she do it as a single woman? Because what exactly does that say about her feelings for her second-best friend? I say second because she had already acknowledged that Dan was her first before Serena’s vajayjay worked its magic.
